Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) has appointed Accenture to carry out a S$30 million ($22.8m) smart energy pilot.

Under the first phase of the three-year Intelligent Energy System (IES) pilot, Accenture and Singapore Power will roll out smart meters and a communications system based on the new next-gen broadband network, the EMA announced this week.

Under phase two in 2012-2013, the pilot will focus on smart grid applications.

The project, funded by the government and Singapore Power, will cover 4,500 residential, commercial and industrial locations, including the Nanyang Technological University campus and the CleanTech Park at Jalan Bahar.

“Besides offering direct benefits to customers, the IES pilot will help to strengthen the power system capabilities and network efficiency in Singapore,” it added.

The smart grid would enable Singapore Power to detect almost immediately the location of localized outages, and help it integrate other energy sources such as solar or co-generation.

This also caters to the future possibility of electric vehicles connecting to the grid, both to draw electricity from the grid and also to supply electricity to the grid during periods of peak demand.

EMA CEO Lawrence Wong said: “This IES pilot project will allow us to deploy and test out promising smart grid applications in selected areas, before rolling them out on a wider scale. All this will support Singapore’s efforts in developing a smart energy economy.”

As well as Accenture and SingPower, ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems), Oracle, HP, Power Automation, Control4 and Greenwave will also take part in the project, EMA said.
