Akamai Technologies has begun a drive to improve the carbon efficiencies of its global delivery network of 61,000 servers.

It says it aims to quantify the cuts in energy and carbon emissions and share the data with its customers.
The initiative is designed improve the hardware and code efficiency within its network, reduce emissions and energy consumption, and meet customer demand for carbon measurement and reporting, Akamai said.
CEO Paul Sagan said that for more than a decade Akamai had been delivering cloud solutions that reduced the energy consumption of customers' web and data center infrastructure.

“We built a massive, shared network of distributed computing power, running on efficient hardware and code, with a higher utilization compared with traditional data center infrastructure, and made it available as a managed service,” he said.

“Moving forward, and in collaboration with our customers, we plan to use the information we collect to identify and implement additional best practices.”

Last year the content delivery network provider eliminated 86 million pounds of CO2, amounting to 32% of its 2008 emissions.

It says it will offer an application to provide customers with monthly data of their carbon footprint on the Akamai platform.
Akamai is also aiming to cut energy, water, and materials consumption within its business operations. It will report on the progress of its sustainability initiative at www.akamai.com/sustainability.
