The UK Environment Agency will be one of the founding customers of a UK data center branded as “the greenest in the world.”
Capgemini’s new Merlin data center in Swindon, west of London, has a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.08, E-Week Europe reports.
The data center, due to open on September 17, uses both fresh air and evaporative cooling, which it says cuts the cooling energy requirement by 92% compared with a conventional center using chilled water.
The facility uses a smart climate control system that continuously monitors air temperature and makes adjustments to stop cold air loss and prevent recirculation of hot air.
“With a factory tested PUE rating of 1.08 across all loads and ambient operating temperatures and humidity, Merlin will deliver the best PUE rating gained industry-wide and is testimony to its achievement in energy efficiency,” Capgemini said in a white paper.
The UK Environment Agency will occupy two of the 12 modules.
