Cisco has launched a consumer version of its TelePresence videoconference system.
The “umi” TelePresence platform, which will debut in the US next month, comprises an HD camera, a console and remote. It connects using an existing HD television and a broadband connection.
For regular consumers it is not cheap, priced at $599, with a $24.99 monthly fee, Reuters said.
It automatically adjusts to lighting conditions and room sizes. Users can use umi to make calls, access video messages, manage contacts, and customize their profile and settings, Cisco said.
“Users can also record their own ūmi videos, which they can share on Facebook, on YouTube, or via email,” it said.
“We envision a future where technologies like this will play a role in connecting consumers with businesses to enable the delivery of new services, ranging from education, to health care, to financial services,” said CEO John Chambers.
Cisco is working with Verizon to bring ūmi to Verizon FiOS fiber network customers early next year.
