Thai mobile operator DTAC has contracted Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to help it cut its carbon footprint.

It will tap NSN’s architecture and expertise to significantly lower carbon emissions from its network.

“Led by our parent company, Telenor, we are committed to green technologies,” said Rolf Marthinusen, chief technology officer, DTAC. “Nokia Siemens Networks’ consulting experts have assessed our network, taking a holistic approach to reducing our energy consumption.”

NSN says its Flexi EDGE base stations contain efficiencies and softswitching that will cut costs by enabling the operator to close down some of its network sites.

The changes will reduce carbon emissions by at least 60% compared to the previous generation of infrastructure providing the same amount of capacity, NSN said.

DTAC will also take other measures, such as improving ventilation to reduce the need for air conditioning, to “significantly reduce our power consumption, carbon emissions and operating costs,” Marthinusen said.
