US giant GE and German wind firm Pro Ventum International have teamed up to build a 90 MW wind farm in Thailand.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed this week, GE is to supply 36 2.5-megawatt wind turbines to the Thep Sathit Wind Farm in Chaiyaphum province, 250 kilometers northeast of Bangkok.
The US firm also said it was considering an equity investment in the project, which is the first wind project in Thailand for both companies.
Thai Energy Minister Wannarat Charnnukul said the Thai government’s policy aimed for renewable resources to account for 20% of power generation by 2020.
Kovit Kantapasara, GE Energy’s country executive for Thailand and Indochina, said the Thai government’s “multi-year incentives” had made wind energy a competitive proposition for potential investors.
The 2.5-megawatt turbine is the largest GE wind turbine available for onshore deployment.
