Getting to green goals: the HP view

Getting to green goals: the HP view

Green Channel: Do you have a dedicated group or team for sustainability at the corporate level, and as well as in the product level or the regional level?

Annukka Dickens: Within HP, we actually have a lot of groups that have environment as part of their charter, which, to me, is a positive thing. For me, it’s really important that these types of things are part of the way in which we do business.

So we have an environmental responsibility within each of the product design teams, so each one of the business group would have their product designers who deliver towards the design for environment program. We then have the supply chain group that looks at the supply chain organization — all of our 700-plus first-year suppliers. And then we have our global real estate organization, which looks after the HP buildings, the HP-managed buildings and the energy efficiency and the waste programs there. We also have a corporate sustainability organization that looks at the HP strategy.

And then, we have ourselves. I’m part of the Asia Pacific environmental management team, and we are really the regional team that ensures that HP meets the requirements in this region, whether it is the regulatory requirements or market access requirements. The way in which all these come together is on the level of global citizenship council, which basically reports to the executive council.

GC: What are your current sustainability goals?
AD: We have a lot of goals, [such as] a 40% goal for energy efficiency. We actually, in fact, met one of our previous goals that was in the same area. We had a goal to reduce the energy consumption and the associated greenhouse emissions of our operations and products by 20%, and 25% by this year, 2010. We have met that goal, and now we’ve set ourselves the new goal, which is around products and further reducing the energy consumption by 40%. So that’s an example of the goal, but there are other goals of course, as well, in the different areas of our organization.
