Google has committed to buying a massive 114-megawatts of wind energy to power its data centers for the next 20 years.

Google Energy has inked a green power purchase agreement with Iowa-based NextEra Energy Resources to buy the power at a fixed rate.

“Incorporating such a large amount of wind power into our portfolio is tricky, but this power is enough to supply several data centers,” Google said on the company blog.

“By contracting to purchase so much energy for so long, we’re giving the developer of the wind farm financial certainty to build additional clean energy projects.”

Taking 114 megawatts of wind power off the market “means producers have the incentive and means to build more renewable energy capacity for other customers.”

Google three years announced it planned to go carbon neutral by building energy-efficient data centers, using renewable energy and buying carbon offsets.

Google Energy, the search firm’s energy offshoot, recently invested $39 million in two wind farms in North Dakota, also developed by NextEra Energy Resources.
