The Company
Hess Oil & Gas Sdn Bhd (Hess), a subsidiary of leading global independent energy company Hess Corporation, is engaged in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas, as well as in refining and in marketing refined petroleum products, natural gas, and electricity. The company employs approximately 650 employees throughout its regional offices in Southeast Asia, including about 150 in its
Malaysian office.
The company has experienced rapid growth and expansion over the years,
particularly in southeast Asia, and relies heavily on its data and information technology services to provide data resources as well as internet services on a regional level.
The Problem
Previously, the company's server room was being cooled by comfort air-conditioning units, and low end UPS systems from various vendors. However, company expansion saw increased heat issues and backup requirements, signaling the need to implement a high performance cooling and power protection system to protect the servers from any
power disruptions that might impact the 24/7 operations in the server room.
“Any downtime in our industry can have a significant impact to our company operations,” said Nicholas Vargis, Team Lead - IS Service Delivery at Hess Oil & Gas Sdn Bhd. “We needed a solution that could address our server room high heat dissipation needs and yet adjust to our changes as the company grows.”
The Solution
Hess evaluated various solutions from different vendors in Kuala Lumpur, including APC by Schneider Electric. After joint discussions with APC, six InfraStruXure InRow RC and 1 Symmetra PX UPS (60kw scalable to 80kw) were purchased.
The InfraStruXure InRow RC is well suited for high-density applications and addresses common challenges such as hot spots and fluctuating temperatures. These units can be added as the IT heat load increases, increasing its ability to address the growing heat densities in today's data centers.
Symmetra PX is designed to cost-effectively provide high levels of availability with N+1 fault-tolerant redundancy, ensuring maximum uptime and near-continuous availability. With its modular and rack-based design, the Symmetra is easy to scale and manage, allowing Hess to employ hot-swappable and user-replaceable modules.
Hess appreciated the service and support delivered by the APC, which saw a smooth implementation with minimal disruption to the business.
“There was great communication and documentation throughout the entire process and the team was flexible in accommodating our changes, even during the midst of implementation,” said Vargis.
To monitor its new and existing infrastructure, Hess also implemented APC's InfraStruXure Central Management System, providing immediate visibility and monitoring of the data center infrastructure: power, cooling, security, and environment. The system's centralized, real-time device monitoring and notifications allow Hess to quickly assess and resolve critical infrastructure events that can adversely affect IT system availability.
Comments
As long as they have no problem with pipeline integrity, I'm on their side. Every oil company in the world should be interested more about their pipeline rather than for their profit. One small accident can cause an entire environmental issue.

Investing in energy, but
Investing in energy, but also doing it in a way that protects the environment will be one of the key aspects for any business in the future to come. Pollution has reached unacceptable rates and those need to go down immediately.
