Hong Kong Electric has commissioned the territory’s largest solar power system, with a capacity of 550 kilowatts.
The solar array, on Lamma Island, is expected to generate 620,000 units of electricity annually, the utility said.
The new HK$23 million ($2.97m) system comprises 5,500 thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules, each with peak output of 100 watts, erected on rooftops of the main building of Lamma Power Station.
The system will help reduce 520 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission and 2.9 tonnes of sulphur dioxide each year.
HKE says it is the first large-scale project to use amorphous silicon thin-film technology, which is greener and consumes less silicon than conventional crystalline silicon modules.
HKE managing director Tso Kai-sum said the company also had received an environmental approval for its offshore wind power project and would soon start wind monitoring.
