HP says it can help businesses reduce the environmental impact of their printing with new tools that measure energy and paper use.

At part of a green revamp of its printing business, HP last week also announced a new global paper policy, a green labelling system and an inkjet printer made mostly from recycled material.

Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president from HP's imaging and printing group, said HP's new tools had helped several Fortune 500 customers cut their imaging and printing carbon footprint by 30% in the last nine months.

Among these are a printing assessment service and carbon calculator that can help firms reconfigure their paper use and carbon emissions and forecast cost savings for printing environments.

HP also took the wraps off a new inkjet printer made almost entirely from recycled materials. It promised by 2010 to increase the amount of recycled materials used in the printers threefold over the 2007 mark.

The new paper policy covers the sustainable manufacture and use of paper HP sells to customers and uses for packaging and its own office printing.

The green labelling system will help customers identify environmental attributes of any of the company's products or services, HP said.
