The Singapore IDA and the National IT Standards Committee are jointly developing a green data center standard.

IDA chief Ronnie Tay says the project aims to “nurture an ecosystem” that will boost the adoption of greener and more efficient data centers in Singapore.

The standard will help organizations improve the efficiency of their data centers by providing a framework and a methodology to achieve continuous improvement.

A Broadgroup study predicts that commercial data center space in Singapore will grow 71% over the next five years. The average data center consumes energy equivalent to 25,000 households.

Tay said a major hurdle in the adoption of green data center practices was the lack of widely-accepted standards and metrics.

This made it difficult for the government to adopt a green data center procurement policy or to implement incentive programs to promote energy-efficient practices.

He issued an invitation for IT firms to examine Singapore’s as a test-bed for next generation green ICT technologies.

Speaking at the launch of High Performance Computing (HPC) Center at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Tay said the NTU supercomputer was ranked sixth most energy-efficient in the world based on x86 architecture and 29th most energy-efficient on the Green500 list.
