Japan is seeking to export low-carbon technology and equipment to Asian countries in exchange for carbon credits, the Japanese press has reported.

The Japanese government has reached basic agreements with Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and India and plans to start talks soon with Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, China and Peru, AFP reported, quoting the Nikkei Business Daily.

It will initially provide financial and technical help to 15 projects in which Japanese firms will export energy-efficient technology, Nikkei said.

Fully implemented, these projects are expected to cut Japan’s greenhouse gas emissions by up to 10 million tonnes. It current emits about 1.3 billion tonnes annually.

These are Japan’s first deals under the bilateral offset mechanism agreed at the Copenhagen climate change summit last December.

Indonesia will host four projects, with Mitsubishi planning a geothermal power plant and utility J-Power an advanced coal-fired power plant, the daily said.
