Google has awarded a $1 million grant to researchers developing low-energy capabilities in servers, one of a number of university research projects aimed at cutting data center energy loads, Data Center Knowledge reports.
Freescale Semiconductor has updated its motion sensor range with the launch of the MMA8450Q. It says the sensor is highly accurate and easy on the power consumption of smartphones and smartbooks.
HP has tightened its e-waste practices, banning the export of electronic waste from the developed economies in the OECD to developing or non-OECD countries.
Virtualization will be a more important trend in the IT industry than the cloud in the next two years, says research firm Infonetics, describing virtualization as “a critical tool for organizations to make their infrastructure more efficient and manageable.”
An IBM research team has built a solar cell with a key layer made entirely of readily-available elements, improving energy efficiency by up to 40%, the company has announced.
