Nokia Siemens Networks and Finnish utility Helsingin Energia will jointly develop and install a smart grid in the new Kalasatama district of Helsinki. The project will create sustainable, high efficiency electric power distribution and services based on modern communication, information and energy technologies.
World energy consumption will grow 49% between 2007 and 2035, driven by economic growth in emerging markets, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Fossil fuels will meet more than three-quarters of global energy needs in 2035 under current policies.
Hong Kong-based LED lighting firm Optiled has built its first wholly-owned plant in Dujiangyan, near Chengdu, Sichuan. It is investing 100m yuan ($14.7m) in the factory, which it expects to produce 400,000 lights and lamps annually.
NEC has launched its new Express5800/E110b-M server, which it says saves 70% more power and requires much less space than previous models.
Nokia Siemens Networks says its Flexi EDGE base station is the first to report its power efficiency according to new ETSI specifications. The base station averages 978 watts in a basic mode of operation and using energy saving software can cut this to 833 watts.
