Foreign IT and communications vendors have given millions of dollars in cash, equipment and services to support the earthquake relief effort in western China.
Motorola donated 15 million yuan ($1.1 million) in cash donations, mobile network equipment, handsets and two-way radios. Motorola crews were providing emergency communications services and were working closely with local carriers and emergency teams, the company said.
Motorola says it will also match staff donations, which now total 4 million yuan.
Alcatel-Lucent has donated more than 5 million yuan and staff have raised 4 million yuan so far, the company announced. The Alcatel-Lucent Foundation donated $150,000 to the International Red Cross and ASB gave 2 million yuan to the China Red Cross to support relief efforts.
Within 24 hours of the quake, its China subsidiary Alcatel Shanghai Bell had established an emergency response team. Nearly 100 staff were assigned full-time to help repair the shattered communications infrastructure, Alcatel-Lucent said.
Cisco gave $1 million to the Red Cross and said it would match employee donations up to $1 million. The TOSA Foundation would match staff donations up to $250,000, Cisco said.
Qualcomm committed $500,000 to the Red Cross Society of China.
