Worldwide virtualization software revenue will increase 43% cent to $2.7 billion in 2009, driven by the need to cut costs and carbon footprint and increase IT agility, Gartner predicts.

Global virtualization penetration would reach 20% this year, up from 12% in 2008, Gartner said. Adoption of virtualzation solutions by IT groups is being driven by the need to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO), enhance the agility and speed of deployment of IT and to minimize carbon emissions.

Gartner says the market includes server virtualization management and infrastructure, and hosted virtual desktops (HVDs).

Revenue from server virtualization management software will increase from $913.9 million in 2008 to $1.3 billion this year, while virtualization infrastructure sales will grow from $917 million to $1.1 billion. HVD is expected to more than triple to $298.6 million.
