World's biggest solar plant to go ahead in China

US energy firm First Solar has won a commitment from a Chinese government to jointly build the world's largest solar power plant.
The 2-gigawatt photovoltaic farm will be part of an 11,950-megawatt renewable energy park planned for Ordos City in Inner Mongolia.
When completed, the facility would generate enough electricity to power 3 million Chinese homes, First Solar said.
The solar farm is set for completion in 2019, First Solar said, after signing an MoU with the Chinese government on Tuesday. Wu Bangguo, head of the National People's Congress, was present at the signing ceremony.
Construction of the first phage, a 30-megawatt demonstration project, will begin by June 1 next year, First Solar said. Three further phases will be rolled out over the following nine years.
The project will operate under a feed-in-tariff which would guarantee the long-term pricing of electricity produced.
First Solar CEO Mike Ahearn said the tariff was critical to the success of the project. “This type of forward-looking government policy is necessary to create a strong solar market and facilitate the construction of a project of this size, which in turn continues to drive the cost of solar electricity closer to ‘grid parity’ – where it is competitive with traditional energy sources.”
The MoU requires First Solar to investigate the possibility of setting up manufacturing sites in Ordos.
“This major commitment to solar power is a direct result of the progressive energy policies being adopted in China to create a sustainable, long-term market for solar and a low carbon future for China,” First Solar CEO Mike Ahearn said at the signing ceremony.
“We’re proud to be announcing this precedent-setting project today. It represents an encouraging step forward toward the mass-scale deployment of solar power worldwide to help mitigate climate change concerns.”
The Arizona-based company also said it had secured a $300 million credit facility to help fund the massive project.
