The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has officially launched its Low-Carbon Office Operation Programme (LOOP) in Hong Kong, with five companies serving as pilot projects.
LOOP is designed to assist office-based companies to measure their carbon footprint and design steps to reduce carbon emissions from their daily operations.
The WWF, which has developed the LOOP with technical partner SGS, said the program includes a simple rating system that can evaluate the carbon performance of the office, and addresses not only its emissions but also the technologies and management practices in place.
“What is special about LOOP is that it offers the first available tool in the Hong Kong market to help companies easily map out their overall office emissions sources so that they know where to start and what practices to adopt to become a low carbon office," said Karen Ho, business engagement leader at WWF Hong Kong.
Ho further said the LOOP tools were developed based on international standards, such as the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, with an aim to figure out the carbon inventory and baseline for companies for reduction in emissions.
Through obtaining a LOOP label, companies can promote the climate-friendly practices to their stakeholders and encourage more to do the same, she said.
The commercial sector is the largest energy user in Hong Kong. Total energy consumption in Hong Kong has increased by 13% during the ten-year period between 1996 and 2006, of which the commercial sector saw the biggest increase of 38%.
Looking at the 2006 figures alone, commercial-related energy use constituted about 40% of Hong Kong’s overall consumption.
The five companies to join the LOOP project are global HSBC, KPMG, Li & Fung (Trading) Ltd, The Body Shop and Sanmark Industrial Ltd.
The WWF further said LOOP "has received overwhelming support from the Hong Kong's corporate sector."
